  • Gaining relevant work experience is an important part of your CA qualification. CA students on a 3 year training contract must achieve a minimum of 450 days relevant work experience during the training contract. In order to be eligible for membership you must complete the full training contract period for the route that you are on and achieve the minimum requirement for relevant work experience. This is recorded in your personal online Achievement Log.  For other routes through the CA Student Qualification please see information.  Professional Entry students should consult the information available on the Professional Entry pages.

The Achievement Log is competency-based and you will self-assess when you are competent in a particular area. The Achievement Log is signed off by your ‘Counselling Member’ (generally your line manager with responsibility for your training).

During your training contract, you must meet a set number of competencies in core areas:

    • Accounting
    • Information Technology
    • Communication and Influencing
    • People, Teamwork and Leadership
    • Personal Effectiveness

You must also meet a set number of technical competencies which will be dependent on your contract/work. In addition, specialist competencies will also be required. Each year you’ll provide a reflective statement on the technical and non-technical skills you have gained. ICAS reviews the Achievement Log during and on completion of your training contract.

    Final year students

Students in their final year must ensure that their achievement log is ready for ICAS final year review within one month of their training contract ending.  Please note that ICAS does not send a reminder to students in their final year as the deadline is outlined clearly in the CA Student Member Handbook.

Your achievement log must be fully signed off by your firm reviewer and counselling member for each year.

What happens if my achievement log is deferred by ICAS?

If your achievement log has been deferred by ICAS this means that there are points to be addressed within your achievement log which will require you to do some re-work. You will be able to view the comments that the reviewer has made by viewing the checklist created.  This can be found by scrolling to the bottom of your achievement log. Once you have addressed these comments please email logbooks@icas.org.uk to request a re-review of your achievement log.  Please note that if your achievement log requires re-work this may impact on the turnaround for admission to membership.

    Final Certificate of Service

The Final Certificate of Service must be signed by your Counselling Member and testify that you are "fit and proper" to be admitted as a member of ICAS.

For students completing the electronic log, the Final Certificate of Service is signed off by your counselling member as part of the final year review on-line.  If you require a copy please download this below. The final certificate of service can be updated by typing in the highlighted fields, however please note that the signature section cannot be typed in and must be manually signed off by your Counselling Member, once this has been done it can either be posted to ICAS for the attention of the Achievement Log Administrator or it can be emailed to logbooks@icas.org.uk.

For students in Year 6, once you have addressed these comments please email studentservices@icas.org.uk to request a re-review of your achievement log.  Please note that if your achievement log requires re-work this may impact on the turnaround for admission to membership.

    EY Degree

The Achievement Log process for students on the EY Degree programme functions in essentially the same way as other students with the main exception that 500 days rather than 450 are required.

Although the EY degree programme lasts for 4 years entries should only be made for years 1, 3 and 4 (i.e., the years you are in the office).  It is important that you make arrangements to ensure your year 1 achievement log is signed off before returning to University or that you are contactable to arrange this.
